The short answer
You can sort good bamboo babywear from bad before you touch it, because the fastest test is the fibre label. A seller who writes “100% bamboo” on a soft knit is either unaware of US labelling law or is ignoring it, and that tells you more about the supply chain than any photograph will.

Start with the label, because it is a legal test
Bamboo sleepwear is not bamboo fibre. It is a regenerated cellulose fibre: bamboo pulp dissolved in chemicals and spun into new filament. That is rayon, and under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act it has to be labelled as rayon or viscose, optionally as “rayon made from bamboo”.
This is enforced. In April 2022 the FTC settled with Kohl’s and Walmart over bamboo labelling and the environmental claims attached to it, with civil penalties of 2.5 million and 3 million dollars.
The rule in Europe points the same way through different wording. Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 requires the generic fibre name on the composition label, and the permitted name for this fibre is viscose. A garment sold on either side of the Atlantic with “100% bamboo” on the composition label is mislabelled.
Use it as a proxy. A brand that gets the fibre name right has someone checking compliance, which usually means someone is also checking the certificate, the shrinkage and the CPSC sleepwear route. A brand that writes “100% bamboo” has told you nobody is doing that job. It is the cheapest quality signal available and it costs you nothing to read.
The same logic applies to “organic bamboo”. Organic certification schemes such as GOTS cover organic natural fibres, and a regenerated fibre cannot qualify, so the phrase is a category error rather than a premium.
Viscose, lyocell and modal: what the process changes
All three start as cellulose and end as a smooth fibre. What separates them is the chemistry in between, and it changes two things you will notice: environmental footprint and wet strength.

The practical takeaway is that lyocell survives family laundry better. If a product page says lyocell but prices itself like basic viscose, treat the claim sceptically and look for the certificate.
One distinction gets blurred constantly and is worth holding on to: lyocell is a process, not a plant. TENCEL lyocell is most often made from eucalyptus and beech pulp rather than bamboo, so “bamboo lyocell” is a narrower and rarer thing than “lyocell”. If a listing uses the two interchangeably, that is a sign nobody at the seller understands the fibre they are selling.
Why price is a weak signal for bamboo fabric quality
The reason two bamboo sleepsuits at very different prices can be the same fabric is structural, and it is worth understanding because it changes how you shop.
The chain from plant to garment has four stages — pulping, fibre spinning, knitting, and making up — and they are usually four different companies. Dissolving pulp production in particular is concentrated in a small number of large plants, so a great many brands are downstream of the same handful of fibre sources. A brand’s price reflects where it sits in retail, its marketing spend and its margin, not a different starting material.
What the extra money buys, when it buys anything real, is one of five things:
- Lyocell rather than viscose, which is a genuinely different and more expensive process.
- A heavier, more evenly knitted fabric, which is a specification the brand had to ask for and pay for.
- Pre-shrinking, which costs a step and is the difference between a garment that holds its size and one that does not.
- Flatlock construction and printed labels, which cost more in making up than overlocking and a sewn tag.
- A current, numbered certificate, which costs money to maintain.
Every one of those is checkable before you buy. None of them is price. That is the whole argument for judging the garment rather than the price tag, and it cuts both ways: a cheap garment that publishes GSM, names the fibre correctly and has flat seams is very likely the better buy.
GSM: the number that predicts how a bamboo garment wears
GSM is grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. It is the most useful single specification on a product page, and the one most often missing.
Weight predicts two things at once. Too light and the knit goes semi-transparent, loses shape at the neckline and wears through at the knees. Too heavy and you lose the thin, cool drape that is the reason to buy bamboo in the first place.
- Roughly 160–180 GSM. Summer bodysuits and thin tees. Light, and will show wear faster.
- Roughly 180–240 GSM. The usual range for baby sleepwear and footed sleepers. This is where most well-made bamboo babywear sits.
- Above 260 GSM. Heavier pieces such as robes and quilted layers. Warm rather than breathable.
Treat these as orientation rather than as a standard, because knit structure interacts with weight: a 200 GSM interlock is denser and less airy than a 200 GSM single jersey. What matters most is that the figure is published at all. A seller who knows their GSM has specified the fabric rather than bought whatever was available.
If no GSM is given, a kitchen scale gets you close on a garment you already own. Weigh it, then compare like with like — two sleepers in the same size and style from different brands are directly comparable by total weight even without knowing the area. A sleeper that weighs noticeably less than another in the same size is made of lighter fabric, and that is the whole point of the number.
Yarn and twist: what actually decides whether bamboo fabric pills
Pilling is the single most common complaint about bamboo babywear, and the cause sits one level below the fabric, in the yarn it was knitted from.
A pill forms when short fibre ends work loose from the yarn surface, tangle together and ball up under abrasion. Three yarn properties decide how readily that happens:
- Staple length. Longer fibres have fewer ends per unit of yarn, so there is less to work loose. Cheaper yarn uses shorter staple.
- Twist. Higher twist binds fibre ends into the yarn body. Low-twist yarn feels softer in the shop, which is exactly why it gets used, and it pills faster.
- Singeing and finishing. Better mills burn off surface fuzz before knitting. You cannot see this directly, but you can see its absence.
The proxy you can check is surface fuzz. Hold the fabric against a dark background in good light and look along the surface rather than at it. A yarn with a visible halo of loose fibre ends is a yarn that will pill. A clean, defined surface is a better one. This is more reliable than softness, because softness is what low twist and surface finishing both produce, and both are what pills.
The caveat is that no yarn survives a hot, rough wash. A good yarn pills at sixty washes rather than at fifteen; it does not pill at never. Care is still the larger variable.
Knit structure: jersey, interlock, rib and what each is for
Two garments can be the same fibre at the same weight and behave completely differently, because the knit structure changes drape, stretch, opacity and how the edges behave.

Two practical conclusions follow. A footed sleeper in single jersey will be thin and will lose its shape at the ankle and the neckline faster than one in interlock, which is why the better sleepers are usually interlock even though it costs more. And a neckline or cuff with no rib at all — just the body fabric turned and stitched — is a corner cut that shows within a month.
Spandex: where it belongs in a bamboo garment, and how it fails
A small amount of elastane is a quality signal rather than a compromise, and knowing where it belongs helps you read a composition label.
Where it earns its place. At 3 to 7%, elastane gives the knit recovery, which is what keeps a neckline from going wavy and a knee from bagging. On a fitted sleeper with zero elastane, the fabric has no mechanism to return to shape and it will not.
Where it becomes a problem. Above roughly 10% the garment starts to compress rather than skim, and on snug-fit sleepwear that is the wrong direction entirely. High elastane is also more expensive to get right, and a cheap high-elastane knit is the worst of both.
How it fails. Elastane is the component that degrades first, and it degrades from three things in particular: heat, chlorine and body oils. That is why a sleeper that has lived in a hot dryer loses its shape long before the cellulose wears out, and why swimwear elastane dies faster than sleepwear elastane. Washing cool and drying low is as much about protecting the elastane as the viscose.
The practical read on a label: 95% viscose from bamboo, 5% spandex is a well-specified sleeper. 100% viscose from bamboo on a fitted garment means no recovery. Anything above 10% spandex on babywear is worth a second look at what the garment is supposed to do.
What to check by hand
When the parcel arrives, five checks take two minutes and tell you most of what you need to know.
- Stretch and release. Pull a section of the body panel gently across the grain and let go. Good knit returns to shape. Fabric that stays distorted has too little recovery and will bag at the knees and elbows within a month.
- Hold it to a window. You are looking for evenness, not opacity. Patchy thin spots mean inconsistent knitting and are where holes start.
- Run a thumb along the inside seams. Inside leg, underarm, shoulder. Flat is good. A ridge you can feel with a thumb is a ridge a sleeping child lies on.
- Check the neckline binding. It should be bound with a separate strip, stitched evenly, and spring back after being stretched over a head. A rolled or wavy neckline out of the packet will only get worse.
- Look at the label itself. Printed is better than sewn. If sewn, it should be at the outside hem, not the back of the neck.
What you cannot assess by hand is softness as a quality signal. Nearly all bamboo viscose feels good new, including the fabric that will pill after four washes, because surface finishing masks the difference. Softness in the shop tells you almost nothing.
Three tests you can run at home
These are simplified versions of standard textile tests. They will not give you a number, but each answers a question that the product page will not.
1. The rub test, for dye fastness. Dampen a scrap of white cotton, press it firmly against a dark area of the garment and rub in a small circle ten times. Look at the white cloth. Faint colour is normal on a new deep-dyed garment and should stop after a wash or two. Obvious colour transfer means poor dye fixation, and that garment will mark other clothes and possibly the child’s skin. This is the test worth running before the first wash, because the answer determines whether it goes in a mixed load.
2. The measure test, for shrinkage. Before the first wash, measure the body length from the shoulder seam to the crotch and write it down. Wash and dry as you intend to going forward, then measure again. A well-finished garment should move very little. A loss of more than a few per cent means it was not pre-shrunk, and on snug-fit sleepwear that is a compliance problem as well as a fit one, because the garment was certified on its dimensions.
3. The dark-background test, for yarn quality. Described above: look along the fabric surface against a dark background in raking light. Visible loose fibre halo means pilling is coming.
All three take less than five minutes in total and are worth doing once per brand rather than per garment. What you are really testing is the supplier.
Zips, poppers and hardware: the parts that fail first
A sleeper is usually retired because a fastening broke rather than because the fabric wore out, and hardware quality is the part of a listing that is never described.
- Two-way zips. The standard on baby sleepers, because it allows a nappy change without undressing the top half. Check that both pullers move independently and that the bottom stop is covered in fabric rather than sitting bare against the stomach.
- The chin guard. A fabric flap at the top of the zip. Its absence is one of the most common causes of a mark under the chin, and it costs almost nothing to include.
- Branded zip tape. A named zip manufacturer is a reasonable proxy for someone having specified the component. An unbranded zip is not automatically bad, but it is not evidence of anything either.
- Poppers. Do them all up once before washing. A set that misaligns when new will always misalign, and that is a manufacturing fault rather than something that settles.
- Foot grips, on footed styles. Moulded silicone survives washing; printed rubber grip wears off within a season and can start to peel, at which point the peeling piece is a choking hazard in its own right.
What goes wrong after five washes, and what it tells you
This is where quality separates, and each failure has a cause worth knowing.

Pilling and stiffness are usually your laundry. Shrinkage past a size, dye transfer, a collapsed neckline and early holes are the manufacturer’s, and they are the ones worth returning a garment over.
Certifications you can verify, and how to verify them
For bamboo, the relevant certification is OEKO-TEX Standard 100. It certifies that the finished article has been tested against a list of substances harmful to health. Product Class I is the strictest tier and is the one covering articles for babies and toddlers, so it is the tier to look for on babywear rather than Standard 100 in general.
Verification is the part people skip. Every genuine certificate carries a number and an issuing institute, and OEKO-TEX publishes a label-check tool where that number can be looked up. If a product page shows the logo without a number, ask for it. A seller who cannot produce one within a day has answered the question.
Be clear about what the certificate does not cover. It says nothing about organic content, nothing about how the garment is sewn, nothing about durability, and nothing about whether the bamboo was processed in a closed loop. It is a chemical-safety test on the finished article, which is worth having and is not a general quality mark.
Two further marks appear on bamboo listings and mean different things. FSC certification, where present, applies to the forestry or plantation source of the pulp rather than to the finished textile. And a closed-loop claim belongs to the fibre producer, not to the garment brand, so it should be traceable to a named fibre — which is why TENCEL appears on labels as a brand name rather than as a generic description.
Five questions to ask a seller about bamboo fabric quality
If a product page does not answer these, the seller can. The answers, or the absence of them, are the most efficient quality screen available.
- What is the exact fibre composition, as it appears on the care label? You are looking for “viscose from bamboo” or “rayon from bamboo” with a percentage, plus elastane if it is a fitted garment.
- What is the GSM? A seller who knows has specified the fabric.
- Is the fabric pre-shrunk, and what is the expected shrinkage? This is the question that predicts whether a snug-fit sleeper stays compliant.
- What is the OEKO-TEX certificate number? It is checkable, and a logo without one is not a certification.
- Are the seams flatlocked and is the label printed? Both are construction decisions rather than fabric ones, and both matter more overnight than the fibre does.
Apply them to us as readily as to anyone else. If one of our garments fails a question on this list, that is worth telling us.
Care that keeps the fabric good
- Cool wash, gentle cycle. Regenerated cellulose loses strength when wet. This single change prevents most pilling.
- No fabric softener, no dryer sheets. They coat the fibre, dull the surface and cut absorbency.
- Turn sleepers inside out. Abrasion happens on the outside; this moves it away from the face of the fabric.
- Wash with like fabrics. Zips and denim in the same load are what pill a soft knit.
- Dry low, or flat. High heat is what shrinks cellulosics past a size and what kills the elastane.
- Do not iron hot. If a garment needs it at all, use the lowest setting on the inside.
- Do not leave damp garments in a pile. Wet is when this fibre is weakest, and sitting wet under the weight of a laundry basket is avoidable mechanical stress.

What does a dye rub test tell me? Whether the colour is properly fixed. Damp white cotton rubbed on a dark area should pick up almost nothing; obvious transfer means the garment will mark other clothes.
Can I put bamboo baby clothes in the dryer? Yes, on low. High heat is what shrinks them past a size, roughens the surface and degrades the elastane.
