How to Wash Baby Clothes: A Guide for Sensitive Skin and Long-Lasting Fabric

The short answer

Wash everything before first wear, use a fragrance-free detergent at less than the dose on the scoop, run an extra rinse, and skip fabric softener permanently. Those four habits solve most of what people try to fix with special products.

Wash everything before first wear

New clothing does not arrive neutral. It carries residues from finishing, dye fixing, and handling through the supply chain, and permanent-press finishes in particular can release formaldehyde. The American Academy of Pediatrics lists permanent-press clothing among household sources of formaldehyde and advises washing such clothing before use.

This applies to gifts and to anything that has been sitting in a wardrobe as much as to new purchases. It does not require a special product: a normal wash with your usual fragrance-free detergent does the job.

One practical caveat. Wash only what you are confident the baby will wear. Newborn sizing is the shortest-lived band in the range and retailers will accept unworn returns but not washed ones, so keep the tags on the rest until the baby has arrived and you know the size. The reasoning behind that is in newborn or 0-3 months.

How much laundry a baby actually generates

Worth stating plainly, because it determines how many garments to own and because nobody warns people about it.

The volume peaks early and falls steadily. In the first three months, between nappy leaks, posseting and the occasional complete change at 3 am, most families are running a load every day or every other day, and a single day can consume three or four bodysuits. By six months the leaks are less frequent and the rate roughly halves. By a year it is largely ordinary laundry with meals attached.

Two things follow. The number of garments to own per size is driven by how often you wash rather than by how many outfits you want, which is why the counts in our sizing guides all carry that qualifier. And the washing routine has to be something you can do daily when tired, which is an argument against anything requiring hand washing, special products or separate loads beyond the first weeks. A routine that is correct but unsustainable gets abandoned in week three.

Detergent: what matters and what does not

What matters:

  • Fragrance-free. Fragrance is the most common avoidable irritant in laundry, and fragrance-free is a more useful signal than any label claiming to be for babies.
  • Dose. Overdosing is the single most common laundry mistake. Excess detergent does not rinse out fully, and what stays in the fabric sits against skin. Use the lower end of the scoop, particularly in a soft-water area.
  • An extra rinse. Worth more than an upgrade in detergent for a baby with reactive skin.

What matters less than the marketing suggests:

  • The word “baby” on the bottle. There is no regulatory definition. A fragrance-free general detergent is usually equivalent and cheaper.
  • “Hypoallergenic”. Undefined for consumer products in any enforceable way. It tells you what the brand wants you to think, not what is in the bottle.
  • Powder against liquid. Both work. Powder can leave residue if it does not dissolve in a cold wash; liquid is the safer default for cool cycles.

Bio and non-bio makes less difference than people expect. Enzymes in biological detergents are effective on the protein stains that dominate baby laundry, milk and food, and are rinsed away in a normal cycle. If a child has reactive skin, non-bio plus an extra rinse is a reasonable precaution rather than a necessity.

What is actually in a detergent, and which parts matter

Detergent marketing is almost entirely about the parts that do not matter. Knowing what the components are makes it obvious which claims to ignore.

Read down the “does it matter” column and the shopping rule writes itself: fragrance-free, dye-free, and enough of it rather than plenty. Everything else is either present in all of them or cosmetic.

Two specific points worth acting on. Optical brighteners are the reason a white bodysuit washed in one detergent can look different from one washed in another — it is not the fabric, it is a fluorescent compound sitting on it. And enzymes are frequently avoided out of caution for babies, which is usually unnecessary: they are rinsed out in a normal cycle and they are what actually shifts milk stains. Non-biological plus an extra rinse is a reasonable precaution for a child with reactive skin, not a general rule.

Two habits beyond temperature. Do not overload: clothes need room to move for detergent to rinse out, and an overloaded drum is a common cause of residue. And turn sleepers inside out, which moves abrasion away from the face of the fabric and slows pilling on smooth knits.

Why to skip fabric softener entirely

Fabric softener works by depositing a lubricating layer on the fibres. That has three consequences on baby clothing, all bad.

  • It reduces absorbency. Consumer Reports and manufacturers agree on this; it is how the product works, not a defect. On towels, muslins and sleepwear chosen for moisture handling, the softener undoes the reason you bought them.
  • It is a common irritant. The coating stays on the fabric, in contact with skin, until the next wash.
  • It can affect snug-fit sleepwear. Residue builds on the fabric of garments certified under the tight-fitting exception, and the routine care instruction for those garments is to wash without softener.

If the aim is softness, the alternatives that work are a half-cup of white vinegar in the rinse compartment, which strips residue rather than adding to it, and drying on low or line-drying with a short tumble at the end. Wool dryer balls reduce static without coating anything. Dryer sheets are fabric softener in another format and carry the same problems.

Bamboo, organic cotton and snug-fit sleepwear

These three need different handling, and mixing them up is the usual cause of the complaints people blame on quality.

Bamboo viscose and lyocell. Regenerated cellulose fibres lose strength when wet, which is why hot, vigorous washing produces the pilling that gets blamed on cheap fabric. Cool wash, gentle cycle, inside out, dry low. Done that way they hold up well; done otherwise they thin quickly.

Organic cotton. The most robust of the three. It tolerates 60 °C when you need it, which makes it the practical choice for the items that get properly soiled.

Snug-fit sleepwear, whatever the fibre. The fit is the safety feature, so anything that changes the dimensions matters more here than elsewhere. Dry low. A garment shrunk a size in a hot dryer is no longer the garment that was certified. The stains that actually come up, and how

Baby laundry is dominated by protein and plant stains, and both respond to the same rule: cold water first, always. Hot water sets protein stains permanently, which is why a milk stain rinsed in hot water never comes out afterwards.

Two general rules do more than any product. Treat it before it dries, since a dried stain is a different and harder problem. And do not put a stained garment in the dryer until you are sure the stain has gone, because dryer heat sets whatever is left. Washing cloth nappies, which follow different rules

Almost everything in this guide points towards less detergent and cooler washes. Cloth nappies are the exception on both counts, and treating them like the rest of the laundry is why they develop problems.

The two-wash routine is the standard approach:

  1. A short pre-wash at 40 °C with a small amount of detergent. Its job is to get the bulk of the soil off so it is not redeposited later. Do this after each use, or store pre-washed nappies until there is a full load.
  2. A long main wash at 40 to 60 °C with a full dose of detergent, in a drum that is around three-quarters full when wet. Nappies need agitation against each other to clean, so an under-filled drum washes worse than a fuller one.

What breaks cloth nappies:

  • Fabric softener, absolutely. It coats the fibre and destroys absorbency, which is the entire function of the product. This is the single most damaging mistake.
  • Too little detergent, which is the opposite of the advice for clothing. Under-dosing leaves soil in the fabric, and that is what becomes the ammonia smell.
  • Washing too small a load. Not enough friction, so nothing gets clean.
  • High heat on waterproof covers, which delaminates the PUL layer. Covers dry on low or on the line; the absorbent inserts are what can take heat.

The ammonia smell, when it appears, means detergent has been under-dosed or the wash routine is not clearing the soil. The answer is more detergent and a better main wash, not a stronger scent. Sun drying helps both with residual staining and with the smell, and it is free.

The counter-intuitive summary: for clothing, use less detergent than the scoop says. For nappies, use what it says and make sure the load is big enough to agitate.

When clean laundry still smells

A specific and common complaint: the washing came out clean, and within an hour of being worn it smells again. This is almost never a hygiene problem and almost always one of three things.

Residue in the fabric. Excess detergent that did not rinse out, or fabric softener build-up, traps the compounds that cause odour and releases them when the garment warms up on a body. The fix is counter-intuitive: less detergent, not more, plus an extra rinse. A soak in dilute white vinegar before a normal wash strips what has already accumulated.

The machine itself. Washing machines used only at low temperatures develop a biofilm in the drum, the door seal and the detergent drawer, and everything washed in them picks it up. Three habits deal with it:

  • Run an empty maintenance wash at 90 °C monthly, with no clothes and no detergent, or with a machine cleaner. This is the single most effective step and most people never do it.
  • Wipe the door seal and leave the door ajar between loads. The rubber fold at the bottom of the seal is where it starts.
  • Pull out and rinse the detergent drawer. Undissolved detergent sits there and grows things.

Damp time. Laundry left in the drum after the cycle finishes, or dried slowly indoors in a cold room, develops the musty smell people blame on the detergent. Get it out promptly and dry it fast; this is one place where a tumble dryer on low earns its keep.

What does not fix it: more detergent, stronger fragrance, or a hotter wash on the clothes. The first two add to the problem and the third damages the fabric without addressing the cause.

Line drying, sunlight and drying indoors

How clothes are dried affects both how long they last and how they smell, and the options are not equivalent.

Line drying in sun is the best option available and it is free. Sunlight has a genuine bleaching effect on residual yellow and orange marks — the stains left by milk, formula and purée that survived the wash — and it is particularly effective on white cotton. Lay the garment flat in direct sun with the stain facing up, and check after an hour. Nothing else removes those marks as reliably.

Two cautions on sun drying. It fades strong colours over repeated exposure, so turn coloured garments inside out. And prints, particularly plastisol transfers, degrade in UV, which is another argument for inside out.

Line drying in shade keeps colour and still dries faster than indoors. This is the default for anything dark or printed.

Drying indoors is where the musty smell comes from, and the mechanism is simply time: fabric that stays damp for many hours in a cool room grows what makes it smell. If indoor drying is the only option, the things that help are airflow rather than heat — spacing garments out, opening a window, or running an extractor. A full load dried in a closed cold room is the worst case.

Tumble drying is the fastest and the hardest on the clothes. Low heat, taken out slightly damp, is the version that does not cost you a size. The last ten minutes of a hot cycle does most of the shrinking and most of the damage to elastane.

Washing when someone is ill

Most baby laundry is a comfort question. Occasionally it is a hygiene one, and the handling is different.

When a hot wash is genuinely warranted: vomiting or diarrhoea in the household, a skin or fungal infection, anything soiled with a nappy accident, and reusable nappies. In those cases 60 °C on cotton is the appropriate choice, and it is one of the reasons to own cotton sleepwear rather than only bamboo viscose, which cannot take it.

What to do beyond temperature:

  • Remove solids before washing, rather than relying on the machine.
  • Wash the affected load separately while the illness is active.
  • Do not overload, because a packed drum reduces both cleaning and rinsing.
  • Dry thoroughly, and in sun if available.
  • Run a maintenance wash afterwards, empty and hot, before the next normal load.

What is not necessary: laundry sanitiser as a routine product. For ordinary washing, detergent, adequate water and proper drying do the job, and a sanitiser adds another residue to rinse out of clothing that sits against a baby’s skin. Keep it for the situations above, if at all.

A garment that has to be washed hot repeatedly will not last as long — that is a real cost, and it is the correct trade during an illness. It is the wrong trade as a default.

Drying without shrinking

Heat is what moves dimensions. A pre-shrunk garment holds its size through washing and loses it in a hot dryer.

  • Low heat or air dry for everything with a fitted shape: sleepwear, leggings, anything with elastane.
  • Take things out slightly damp and finish on a rack. The last ten minutes of a dry cycle does most of the shrinking.
  • Line dry in sun for stains, which is genuinely effective on residual yellow marks and costs nothing.
  • Do not iron snug-fit sleepwear hot. If it needs pressing at all, use the lowest setting on the inside.

The load itself: sorting, capacity and what not to wash together

How a load is put together decides how well any of the above works, and two of the most common problems trace back to it.

Overloading is the invisible cause of residue. Clothes need room to move for detergent to rinse out. A drum packed to the top cleans worse and rinses much worse, and the rinsing is the part that matters for a baby’s skin. The rough test is that a full drum should still have a hand’s width of space at the top with the clothes settled.

What should not share a load:

  • Zips, hooks and denim with soft knits. This is what pills a bamboo sleeper and snags a muslin. Do up every zip before washing, and keep the hard items separate from the soft ones.
  • New deep colours with pale baby clothes, for the first two or three washes. Loose surface dye comes off early and lands on whatever is next to it.
  • Towels with anything that matters. They shed heavily and the lint ends up on everything else in the drum.
  • Heavily soiled items with ordinary laundry, during illness or after a nappy accident. Wash those separately and hot.

What can share a load, contrary to habit: a baby’s clothes and the rest of the family’s, after the first few weeks, provided the whole load uses a fragrance-free detergent. Separate baby washing is worth doing while the skin barrier is newest and while you are still learning what a child reacts to. Beyond that it is extra loads for no benefit, and running more half-loads is worse for both the clothes and the bill than running fewer full ones.

A note on mesh bags. They are genuinely useful for the two things that get destroyed in a normal load: muslins, which snag on everything, and anything with poppers or grip soles that catches on softer fabric. They are not needed for ordinary bodysuits.
