Why UPF 50+ Swimwear Matters for Kids

The short answer

UPF 50+ means the fabric lets through no more than one fiftieth of the UV radiation reaching it, measured on that specific fabric in a laboratory. It is a genuinely useful thing to buy, and it is not the whole answer, because the rating is measured on dry, unstretched cloth and a child in the sea is neither.

What the rating actually measures

UPF, ultraviolet protection factor, is measured by passing UV light through the fabric and recording how much gets through. The standard test method is AATCC 183, and the labelling rules in the US come from ASTM D6603. A rating of 50 means one fiftieth transmission, which is 98%; UPF 50+ is the highest category the standard allows.

The detail worth knowing is what the test conditions are. The measurement is taken on dry fabric, lying flat and unstretched. There is a separate standard, ASTM D6544, that simulates the life of a garment by exposing it to washing, chlorine and sunlight before testing, and the better labels apply it. A rating derived without that step describes the garment the day it left the factory.

Four things reduce the real-world figure:

  • Water. A wet fabric transmits more UV than the same fabric dry, because water fills the gaps between fibres and reduces scattering.
  • Stretch. A swimsuit pulled tight over a stomach has larger gaps between yarns than the same fabric relaxed.
  • Wear. Chlorine, salt and repeated washing degrade both the fibre and any UV-absorbing finish.
  • Coverage. The rating applies to the fabric, not to the child. A UPF 50+ swimsuit protects the skin under the swimsuit and nothing else.

The four standards behind a UPF label, and why they differ

A UPF number on a label can come from any of several standards, and they are not identical. Knowing which one applies tells you how much the number is worth.

Two differences are worth acting on.

The European standard is the only one that regulates coverage. EN 13758-2 does not just require the fabric to reach a threshold; it also sets requirements on how much of the body a garment must cover before it can be marked under the standard. That closes the gap this article keeps returning to, which is that a rated fabric on a garment covering very little is a rated fabric protecting very little.

Simulated-use preparation is what separates an honest label from an optimistic one. A UPF figure measured on fabric straight off the roll describes a garment nobody will ever wear: real swimwear is stretched, wet, chlorinated and washed. Where a manufacturer states that the rating survives the ASTM D6544 preparation, that number means substantially more.

What none of the standards do is tell you how the garment performs on a specific child. Fit, wetness and how much skin is left out are all outside the test, and all three are usually larger variables than the difference between UPF 40 and UPF 50+.

That last row is the strongest practical argument for clothing. Sunscreen performance in real use falls far short of the number on the bottle, because most people apply a fraction of the quantity used in testing and reapply less often than directed. A garment does not have that failure mode: once it is on the child, it is delivering close to its rating for as long as it stays dry and unstretched.

A statistic worth correcting

You will see it repeated everywhere, including by retailers selling sun protection: that children receive up to 80% of their lifetime sun exposure before the age of 18. It is not true, and it is worth knowing where it came from.

The figure originated in 1986, from a modelling exercise showing that regular use of SPF 15 sunscreen through the first 18 years of life could reduce lifetime non-melanoma skin cancer incidence by around 78%. That conclusion about the benefit of protection was then misread as a claim about the timing of exposure. Later analysis of actual measured UV exposure, published by Godar and colleagues, found Americans receive less than a quarter of their lifetime UV dose by age 18, and that adults over 40 have the highest annual exposure of any group.

Correcting it does not weaken the case for protecting children. Childhood sunburn is independently associated with later melanoma risk, children’s skin is thinner, and a child at a beach is outside for longer stretches than most adults. Those are the real reasons, and they hold up without an inflated number attached. It does mean the adults in the family need the same care, which the 80% figure quietly implies they do not.

How to choose a garment, in order of what matters

  1. Coverage first. A long-sleeve rash top and shorts cover perhaps five times the skin a two-piece does. This matters far more than the difference between UPF 30 and UPF 50+.
  2. A stated rating, ideally tested after simulated wear. An unstated rating is not a rating. Where a garment carries one, it belongs to that garment rather than to the fibre it is made from.
  3. Fabric and colour. Tightly knitted synthetics rate highest; darker and more saturated colours absorb more UV than pale ones. This is why a thin white cover-up is doing less than it looks.
  4. Fit that is close but not stretched. Tight enough to stay put, loose enough that the fabric is not pulled thin over the body.
  5. Durability features. Chlorine-resistant fabric and flatlocked seams, because a garment that survives a season keeps its rating longer.
  6. Something the child will wear. The most protective garment in the world protects nothing from a poolside bag.

Layering, because no single measure is enough

Dermatology and public health bodies consistently describe sun protection as layered rather than as a single product choice. In practical order:

  • Timing. Avoiding peak UV does more than anything you can buy. The EPA UV Index is a better guide than temperature, since UV peaks around midday regardless of how warm it feels.
  • Shade. An umbrella, a tree or a beach tent. Note that shade reduces direct UV but not reflected UV from sand and water.
  • Clothing. The most reliable layer, for the reasons above.
  • A hat with a brim, covering ears and the back of the neck.
  • Sunglasses, which cover a region clothing cannot.
  • Sunscreen last, on the areas nothing else covers: face, hands, feet, and the gap at the neckline.

For infants under six months the order changes: shade and clothing do the work, and sunscreen is reserved for small areas where shade and clothing genuinely are not possible. Cloud cover is not a layer; a substantial share of UV passes through it.

The setting changes the weighting too, and a beach and a garden are not the same problem. At a beach, sand and water reflect UV upward, which reaches skin that overhead shade does not cover and makes clothing the more reliable layer. At a pool, the water reflects but the surroundings are usually less open, and the practical issue is the sheer length of time children stay in. In a garden or a park, shade is usually available and the failure is simply not using it, because nobody is thinking about sun on an ordinary afternoon at home. The layer that needs the most attention is different in each case, which is why a single rule applied everywhere tends to be wrong in two of the three.

Swimwear styles compared by how much skin they actually cover

Since coverage matters more than the rating, it is worth comparing the styles on exactly that.

Two conclusions follow that cut against how swimwear is usually bought. A UPF 30 rash top and shorts protect a child far better than a UPF 50+ two-piece, because the coverage difference is a multiple and the rating difference is a fraction. And the long-sleeve one-piece is underrated: it has the coverage of a two-garment set with nothing to ride up at the waist, which is where most exposure happens after an hour in the water.

The practical set-up for a beach day is a rash top and shorts for the hours outside, and whatever the child prefers for short in-and-out sessions. Forcing full coverage for a twenty-minute swim in low UV is how a child learns to refuse the garment on the day it matters.

Sun protection by age, because the strategy changes

The layered approach is constant. What changes is which layer carries the weight.

Two notes across the whole range. The adults are frequently the least protected people at the beach, and a family where the adults cover up produces children who do the same without it being a fight. And a burn in childhood matters more than an equivalent burn later, which is the real argument for the effort at these ages — not any statistic about the proportion of lifetime exposure.

Reading a UV Index, and what the number means for a child

The UV Index is the most useful planning tool in this whole area and the least used, because people plan around temperature instead. The two are only loosely related: a bright, cool spring day can carry a higher UV Index than a hazy hot one in late summer.

Three things about the index that change what you do:

  • It peaks around solar noon, not at the hottest part of the afternoon. The heat lags the sun by a couple of hours, which is why the most dangerous period feels milder than the one that follows it.
  • It rises with altitude and near reflective surfaces. Sand, water, concrete and snow all bounce UV back upward, which reaches skin that shade does not cover — under a chin, under a hat brim, under an umbrella.
  • Cloud is unreliable. Thin cloud reduces UV far less than it reduces the feeling of heat, which is why overcast days produce a surprising number of sunburns.

The practical version for a family day out: check the index rather than the forecast temperature, plan the indoor or shaded part of the day around the middle of it, and treat reflected UV at a beach or a pool as a reason for covering clothing rather than shade alone.

Is UPF swimwear worth the extra money?

Rated swimwear costs more than unrated swimwear, and the honest answer is that it depends on which of two things you are actually buying.

What you are paying for, when the premium is real: a tested rating rather than an assumed one, a fabric dense enough to deliver it, chlorine-resistant construction so it survives a season, and flatlocked seams that do not chafe a wet child. All four are checkable and all four are worth money.

What you are sometimes paying for instead: the letters UPF printed on a swing tag with no number, no standard and no test behind them. The term is not policed the way a specific rating under a named standard is, so a garment described as “UV protective” without a figure is making a marketing claim rather than a measured one.

Three situations where the premium is clearly justified:

  • A beach or pool holiday, where a child is outdoors for hours daily and reapplying sunscreen to a wet child repeatedly is the alternative.
  • A child who burns easily, where the reliability of a garment beats the variability of sunscreen application.
  • Anywhere with a high UV Index routinely, where the exposure is a daily rather than an occasional question.

And two where it is not: a weekly indoor swimming lesson, where there is no UV at all, and a child who has nearly outgrown the size, where the garment will not survive long enough to repay the difference.

The cost-per-wear view settles it in most cases. A rated rash top worn every day of a two-week holiday and again the following summer is inexpensive per use; the same garment bought for one afternoon is not. Size for the season it will be worn in, and buy the coverage rather than the highest number.

Where the gaps are: what a rated swimsuit does not cover

The rating belongs to the fabric. Everything not under the fabric is unprotected, and the gaps are predictable enough to list.

  • The back of the neck, particularly when a child is face-down in the water or bending over a rock pool. A rash top with a higher neck, or a hat with a back flap, closes this one.
  • The tops of the ears, which almost nobody covers and which burn readily. A brimmed hat rather than a cap.
  • The tops of the feet. Frequently the worst burn of a beach day, because they point straight up when a child is lying down.
  • The parting of the hair and the scalp. A hat, since sunscreen on a scalp is unpleasant and rarely reapplied.
  • The area under a loose neckline, which opens when a child leans forward. Close-fitting necklines do better than loose ones.
  • Anywhere the swimsuit has ridden up, which after an hour of swimming is usually the upper thigh and the lower back.

The general principle is that a garment protects while it is in position, and children move. Checking where a swimsuit has migrated to is worth doing when you reapply sunscreen, which is the moment you are already looking.

Care, because the rating degrades

  • Rinse in fresh water after every use. Chlorine and salt left in the fabric break down both fibre and elastane.
  • Never wring. It distorts the knit, and a distorted knit has larger gaps.
  • Dry in the shade. Drying a swimsuit in direct sun exposes it to exactly the radiation it is built to block.
  • No hot wash, no tumble dryer, no fabric softener. Heat destroys elastane, and softener coats the fabric.
  • Retire it when it goes thin or baggy. A stretched, thinned swimsuit no longer performs at its rating, however new the label looks.

Myths worth dropping

  • “It is cloudy, so we are fine.” A large share of UV passes through cloud.
  • “They are in the water, so they are covered.” UV penetrates water, and reflection off the surface adds to the dose.
  • “A t-shirt is enough.” A dry white cotton t-shirt rates around UPF 5 to 8, and wet it is lower.
  • “Dark skin does not need protection.” Higher melanin gives some baseline protection, not immunity, and skin cancer in darker skin is typically diagnosed later.
  • “We only need it on holiday.” UV exposure accumulates on ordinary days outdoors.

What this guide does not claim
